On the Noto Peninsula, the landscape always seemed to lead back to the water. Staying above Tsukumo Bay, the sea appeared through windows, between trees and beyond terraces, changing with the light throughout the day. This series follows that relationship from a quiet stay surrounded by forest to the bay itself — a landscape experienced first from above, then from the water.

01 - Above the bay

Hyakurakuso sits among the trees above Tsukumo Bay, with the landscape appearing throughout the stay framed by windows, reflected in the baths and glimpsed from terraces and quiet corners. Inside, warm timber and low light contrast with the greens and blues beyond, while a path through the forest leads down towards the water.

02 - On the water

From the shore, Tsukumo Bay feels almost enclosed by the surrounding forest. From the water, its geography begins to reveal itself. A small boat journey traces the edge of the bay past wooded slopes, fishing boats and quiet settlements, looking back towards the ryokan from the landscape that had framed the stay.
